The Bronco boys are hitting their stride, and at the most opportune point in the season. Riding on a seven-game winning streak and touting a 10-2 overall record, the Bronco boys head to 8-4 Paxton on Thursday and will take on 1-11 Maywood when the RPAC conference tournament kicks off in Benkelman on Saturday. This week, the Broncos added another couple wins to their overall record, routing both 6-6 Perkins County at home on Friday night and 4-6 Garden County on the road the next day.
Dominating Perkins County When the Broncos play as a team and it all clicks, it’s phenomenal. Friday night was no exception, as the Broncos busted out 30-15 at halftime and kept right on rolling over Perkins County. Struggling against 6’10” Kye Kurkowski’s height under the net at first, the Broncos held a slim 11-8 lead over Perkins County after the first quarter of play. Stepping up in the second and rattling the Plainsmen to the tune of 19-7, the Broncos soon showed which team would dominate the game. Continuing to roll in the second half, WP put up 29 points compared to 24 from the Plainsmen to roll to the 59-39 victory. Chris Bartels and Drew Harris led six Broncos on the scoreboard, contributing 20 points each. Both juniors shot above 50 percent from the field, Bartels hitting 64 percent of his field goals and Harris canning 58 percent of his. Both had eight free throw opportunities, with Bartels hitting five and Harris six. Harris also led in steals and rebounds with six of each. He and Bartels led in assists with four each. Other Bronco scorers were Ricky Martin and Bo Fanning with six points each, Myles West with five and Landen Lawless with two. Martin tagged two blocked shots on the evening. Due to their height advantage, Perkins County led on the boards, 23-22.
Nine Broncos score in pummeling of Garden County in Oshkosh Nine Broncos found themselves in the scoring stat book on Saturday, while blasting past Garden County, 77-45. Harris led all scorers with 23 points, followed by Bartels with 21, as the Broncos bounced out 21-6 and never looked back. Martin added nine points, Lawless and Myles West six apiece, Ryan Fischer five, Logan Bischoff three, and Reese West and Fanning two apiece. Harris was a single board short of yet another double-double, pulling down nine rebounds to lead the Broncos. West led in steals with seven and Bartels had seven assists to lead that category.
Jayvee action The Bronco jayvee team went 1-1 last week, suffering loss to Perkins County and pulling off a win against Garden County. In the 37-30 loss to Perkins County, WP was led by Bischoff’s 13-point performance. Lawless put in seven points, Jack McGraw six, Reese West and Jacob Maris two each. Maris led the Broncos to a 40-32 win over the Eagles on Saturday night with 10 points. Bischoff helped out with nine, Fanning seven and McGraw six. |
