Three fire departments responded to a fire early Friday evening that destroyed a metal quonset owned by Tab and Lisa Wood.
The Woods called the Imperial Volunteer Fire Department (IVFD) about 4 p.m. upon discovering the fire on their farm about 8 miles south of Imperial.
By the time the IVFD arrived the structure, used as a shop, was fully involved.
First Assistant Chief Doug Mitchell said his crew pulled hand lines around the building, determined that the fire wouldn’t involve any other structure, and let the fire burn itself out.
The IVFD had set up two porta-tanks to hold water in case it was needed.
Mitchell said the State Fire Marshall isn’t sure what caused the fire, but “it definitely was accidental.”
He said it looked as if the fire started near a pickup truck, which was destroyed in the fire, along with saddles, hay and other farm equipment.
By the time firemen wrapped up their hoses and left the scene, it was about 8 p.m., Mitchell said.
Assisting IVFD were two units from Wauneta, two from Lamar and two Imperial Emergency Medical Services ambulances.
