The Wauneta-Palisade girls’ basketball team defeated Hitchcock County Friday at home and Southwest at Bartley Saturday.
Both teams came out firing in the game against Hitchcock County. The Lady Falcons made layups on two of their first three possessions and hit a three pointer on the other to open up a 7-3 lead.
W-P opened the game with a three pointer by Brianna Einspahr and, after a basket by Hitchcock County, another three by Abbie Fanning narrowed the gap to 9-6. Fanning’s basket started a 14-5 Lady Bronco run.
During the run, W-P got a layup from Fanning off a steal from Lee, a jumper by Fanning and Lee made a conventional three-point with an assist from Sydnee Harchelroad.
W-P rounded out the run with Lee’s put back and two Cassisdy Rathe free throws.
Hitchcock County, meanwhile, missed six shots and only made two buckets over the final 4:30 minutes of the first quarter.
With two free throws from Lee and a bucket by Lee off an assist from Brooklyn Nordhausen, W-P took a 17-14 lead only to see the Lady Falcons come back to take a 25-21 lead.
Hitchcock County put nine points on the board before five straight points by Emma Skelton pulled W-P back into the lead.
One free throw by Lee rounded out the half with the Lady Broncos leading 27-25.
Although both teams found wide open looks off screens against the other’s man defense, Hitchcock County started off the second half from the outside, hitting two three pointers to take the lead 31-29.
W-P scored on their first two possessions when Einspahr found Lee for a basket and Skelton answered with her own three pointer.
Another two baskets by Hitchcock County, around a bucket by Skelton off an assist from Lee, gave the Lady Falcons a 35-34 lead, its final of the game. Nordhausen’s put back pushed the Lady Broncos back into the lead for good.
Seven players scored in the second half for W-P and three players finished the game in double figures.
Skelton led the team with 15 points. Lee, with a nice all around game, scored 14 points and Fanning added 10.
Beat Southwest 40-36
After a slow first half, the Lady Broncos came alive in the second half to defeat 3-8 Southwest.
Fanning scored two points in the first and second quarters, her only baskets of the game.
Lee added two buckets in the second quarter and Rathe scored two points to give W-P 10 heading into half time.
Lee carried the team in the second half, scoring 20 points over the two quarters, as the Lady Broncos put up 15 points in the third and fourth quarters en route to the 40-36 win.
Einspahr and Fanning scored six and four points, respectively.
The Lady Broncos will now travel to Perkins County (5-6) Friday and host Garden County (3-7) on Saturday.
After starting the season 1-5, Perkins County has gone 4-1, including a 43-41 win over Dundy County-Stratton on Jan. 3.
