Wauneta’s annual celebration, Harvest Festival, is just around the corner. The event will take place July 25-29 this year.
Last week, the Wauneta Chamber announced the theme for this year’s celebration, “Humble beginnings...winning traditions.”
The parade grand marshals will be the 2012 Wauneta-Palisade football team, who took the state championship their first year back in 6-man football.
As usual, the weekend will be full of events for people of all ages. On Thursday, July 25 things will get started with Harvest Fest specials at Tommy’s Sports Club II and a pancake supper and bingo at the Senior Center.
Friday, the village will host Pool Olympics and Champa group will begin their digital photo contest with this year’s themes, “flowers” and “general.” New this year, Champa will also host a video contest, “Wauneta’s Funniest Videos.”
Friday evening at the park will feature pie-the-cheerleaders, kids activities sponsored by Wellstone Industries, the Lion’s Club walking taco feed and sand volleyball.
The Chateau Theatre will finish out the evening by showing “The Lone Ranger.”
Saturday is by far the busiest day during Harvest Fest. Things start off with a Yucca Run and Fun Run and the BWTelcom courtesy breakfast. The parade will start at 10 a.m. MT/11 a.m. CT.
The W-P Volleyball team will sell root beer floats before and during the parade and the cheerleaders will hold a cake raffle during the parade.
After the parade, Mercy Meals will hold an Indian taco fundraiser at the Legion where they will be frying the bread in a 22-gallon cast iron caldron brought in by Pastor Keith Wellman.
Valley Bank & Trust will host a Nickel Scramble for preschoolers and Scrabble Run for children in kindergarten to sixth grade. Harchelroad Motors will host their annual Poker Walk after the parade.
Saturday afternoon will feature nickel beer at Good Times and free swimming at the pool.
The annual Water Fights, hosted by the Wauneta Volunteer Fire Department, will start at 12:30 p.m. MT/1:30 p.m. CT.
Later that afternoon, the second annual Cody Fanning Horse Shoe Tournament will be held at the park. The FFA will also hold their annual Duck Race.
Saturday evening the Wauneta Chamber will host their annual free barbeque on main street with homemade pie, ice cream and drinks sold by the Methodist Church members.
Saturday evening the Chateau Theatre will show “The Lone Ranger” free of charge.
Saturday’s activities will wrap up with a DJ Dance sponsored by the Wauneta Chamber at the Legion.
Harvest Festival will come to a close on Sunday with breakfast and drink specials at Tommy’s Sports Club II, a dinner at the Senior Center and a movie that evening at the Chateau.
