Dear Editor:

I want to share something that I heard on a television program. It is a remedy to prevent future government shutdowns, one that relies on a process, and one that doesn’t leave the fate of the American people in the hands of politicians and their agendas.

On this show, the panel was talking about the shutdown, and the host showed a clip of an interview he had with Israeli Prime Minister Netanyahu.

Netanyahu explained that in Israel the government has a law in place that prevents government shutdowns because of budget disputes.

He said that if the powers that be can’t agree on a budget, then a budget is automatically put into place that is one-twelfth of the previous year’s budget for the first month.

This goes on for the second, third, fourth month, etc., with each month having a budget that is one-twelfth of the previous year’s budget.

If at the end of the sixth month, the representatives fail to come up with an agreement, they automatically go to elections.

At this point in the interview, Netanyahu smiled and said, “They have always come up with a budget.”

Thank you,
