Orthman Manufacturing announced last week that Wauneta alumni Randy Haarberg joined their team as a Precision Tillage Systems Agronomist. In the position Haarberg will focus on agronomic education and will assist the Orthman team, dealers, and growers world-wide with crop production systems recommendations.
Haarberg, who graduated from Wauneta High School in 1983, took the position after owning his own crop consultant company working in northeast Colorado for the past several years.
He studied at Chadron State College, graduating with a degree in Agribusiness in 1988. He then worked as a crop consultant for an ag firm for four years prior to starting his own business, Haarberg Consulting, Inc.
When asked how his Wauneta heritage shaped his career Haarberg said, “Growing up in a major agriculture community made you feel like it is a very, very important job. It was a major reason I chose to do what I did.”
In the months prior to accepting the new position, since last May, Haarberg worked as a contractor for Orthman to get a feel for the organization. During that time he was able to observe ag operations in Nebraska, Kansas, Iowa, Missouri, South Dakota, North Dakota, Michigan, Illinois, Indiana and Ohio. He also traveled to Germany and the Ukraine to observe.
Haarberg commented that it has been very interesting to see how agriculture works in different areas in the United States and abroad.
“I am very excited to join the Orthman team,” said Haarberg. “As a private agronomist, my goal was to help growers achieve production and yield goals, to create a profitable farm–and Orthman was often part of that solution. Today I can help achieve those same goals for Orthman customers around the world,” he said.
“Randy’s 26 years as an agronomist focused on the high scale producer, combined with his long-time, real-world experience with Orthman equipment, will provide our dealers and growers with real expertise and results-based solutions around the world,” said Orthman Sales and Agronomy Manager, Justin Troudt. “Randy offers a lifetime of experience to our agronomy team and will be a valuable resource for our Allied Partner dealers,” said Troudt.
Haarberg and his wife Jackie, also a WHS alum, son Rad and daughters Amanda and Sasha, reside in Omaha. The family maintains many strong ties to the Wauneta area with many family members in the area. Haarberg and his family still contribute to the community, including volunteer work at Mercy Meals of Southwest Nebraska when they are in town.
