Ag Safety Day will welcome nearly 500 local students

Ag Safety Day will be held Monday at the Chase County Fairgrounds.
Students in K-6 from Chase County and Wauneta-Palisade Schools, as well as some home-schooled children, will spend the day learning about ag-related topics from chemical safety, electrical safety, ATV safety and more.
Katie Miller will speak to parents and the public Sunday at 7 p.m. MT/8 p.m. CT in the school auditorium about technology safety.
Miller will also speak to the younger students on Monday and to 7-12 students on Tuesday.
Ag Safety Day coordinator, Chris Tomky, said they are expecting almost 500 youths between CCS, Wauneta-Palisade and home-schooled children.
One of the sessions will include chemical safety, which Tomky says will be a fun, messy project for the kids as they learn how adding different chemicals to each other can change what they do.
Personnel from Southwest Public Power District will conduct a session on electrical safety, and Susan Harris from the University of Nebraska at Kearney will bring the ATV simulator to learn about ATV safety.
Other sessions include firearm safety, though there will be no actual firearms involved, Tomky said, and a  911 simulator at which youths can practice what to tell a dispatcher.
