Last day incumbent filing creates another county office race

Activity on the last day for incumbents to file has created another race for a Chase County office.
Penny L. Strand of Imperial filed for Chase County Treasurer, challenging incumbent Cynthia Schoenberger. Both have filed on the Republican ticket, so just one will advance out of the May Primary.
Strand, currently completing a four-year term on the Chase County Schools board of education, was required to file by the Feb. 15 incumbent deadline. According to the Secretary of State’s Office, an incumbent includes anyone who currently holds office, but wants to file for a different one.
Strand did not refile for the CCS board position.
Both incumbents on the Imperial City Council, Chad Yaw and Charlesa Kline, filed on Feb. 14, the day before the deadline. As of Tuesday, they are the only ones seeking a council seat.
Joshua Fries also took time Feb. 14 to file for the Imperial Airport Authority board. If elected, he would be a newcomer to the board.
Besides Strand, three other incumbent office-holders in Chase County chose not to file for re-election to the seat they now hold.
They include Don Weiss Jr. for Chase Co. Commissioner Dist. #3, William (Bill) Bauerle for Imperial Airport Authority and Bill Bischoff for the Wauneta-Palisade board of education.
